Public network camera data is distributed on the Internet for monitoring security, traffic, and weather all around the world. This visual data can be used for applications beyond its indented purpose but there is no easy way to access the relevant data spread across thousands of websites in many different formats. Researchers at Purdue University have developed an automated and generalized search engine of live network camera data. Through analysis of common formats and methods used to distribute network camera data across heterogeneous web page structures, an automated camera discovery module that can crawl the websites and indexed network camera data was created. The web crawler successfully identified a total of 16,000 potential network cameras with a precision of over 90% through evaluating 85 domains with varying amounts of network camera data.
