High Performance Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by Surface Tailoring

Researchers at Purdue University have developed an optimized multifunctional tri-layer membrane system as an effective way of enhancing the life-time and capacity of lithium (Li) metal batteries. This tri-layer membrane system maintained 99.6 percent of its original capacity after 500 cycles whereas under the same test conditions other standard systems maintained around 80 - 90 percent of their original capacity. Furthermore, through electrochemical stability tests, the designed separator showed positive potential for facilitating stable operation of Li metal batteries by maintaining a stable cycle performance for over 50 cycles at 0 deg C through an enhanced Coulombic efficiency of around 96%. This technology shows that Li metal batteries can be both high performing and stable.
