The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) establishes national standards to protect individuals' medical records and other personal health information. Currently, patients evaluate health care options based on often-erroneous heuristics like "high cost implies high quality". Currently self-insured employers cover medical expenses for their employers. Bad choices can result in high expenditures but also negatively impact the quality of an employee's work productivity. There is a need for a new technology that makes it easier to choose a care provider.

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a new technology that is an online matching platform that allows for a match without needing to reveal their respective sensitive information. This technology provides access to detailed information on provider quality while making healthcare decisions. This online matching platform allows for secure matching which preserves confidentiality. This platform is suitable for real-time applications. This technology could open the door for a new approach to choosing a healthcare provider.
