There is a huge variance among the different plant body parts. Existing imaging devices can only sample a local part, which does not represent the whole plant. There is need for a screening method that captures the entire plant.

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a handheld "sliding imaging" device for fast plant screening. This device captures all of a plant's body parts. In addition, a "line imaging" feature allows measuring part distribution on the perpendicular direction to the sliding direction. This devices integrates with a previously developed technology "cloud phenotyping" project as a new device component for plant screening.
