CRANE-102255
Most receivers, especially inexpensive receivers, do not have a signal strength indicator built in. Even those that do may only operate over a limited range of signal levels and offer an inadequate indication of signal level to a user. Unless there is a signal indicator built in, it is difficult to determine the signal level and the addition of wires can skew the results.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane), has developed and patented a signal measurement system to address the shortcomings in existing technology. The system remotely measures and rapidly tracks signal level at an antenna input of a receiver with built-in antennas in a variety of environment. Such measurement can be used to determine actual antenna patterns, path loss, and the impact of propagation anomalies outside of a laboratory setting.
