Limiting Fluorescence Interference in Raman Spectroscopy

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a new technique for Raman spectroscopy that enhances Raman signal strength amid fluorophores, is low-cost, and fieldable. Traditionally, discerning Raman peaks of chemicals at low concentration and in the presence of fluorophores has been difficult. By directing short, visible-wavelength pulses at the sample, the Purdue researchers separate Raman from fluorescence signals. The researchers also found the ideal timing window such that Raman peaks are not eliminated, and fluorescence peaks are not yet detected.
Technology Validation: The method produced the correct Raman peak heights and locations for an array of test compounds including benzene, TCE, nitrate, and olive oil constituents. In addition, key components of gasoline were observed, including benzene, heptane, decane and olefins. By increasing sampling time, peak heights increased, even for samples with strongly-fluorescing components.
