Many commercial packages are offered for collaborative product shape design, but they require considerably broader capabilities than simple collaborative applications. These methods cause project delays and duplication of information that in turn cause delayed product revenues and increased costs.

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a web-based and platform-independent system to collaboratively and synchronously create, delete, and edit CAD designs. The system sends data based on a client's privileges in order to reduce the network load. The front end of the program is located at the client site and the server has the solid modeler and the constraint solver.

-More cost effective
-User role is used to determine who can modify information
-Software is easily scalable
-Minimum load at client so minimal computer power is used
